What do you charge for treatment and cleanings?

It is difficult to quote fees without knowing exactly what is needed.  For example:

  • There are different levels of cleanings which can’t be determined until an exam is performed.
  • There are many surfaces of the tooth where decay can develop.  Therefore, it is difficult to quote a fee without knowing the size of the filling and how many surfaces are involved.
  • Roots of teeth have a variety of shapes which can not be seen without an xray. Without this information it is impossible to know the difficulty of removing a tooth (extraction).

Therefore, without x-rays and/or examining the patient, it is difficult to quote fees over the phone. We do offer a $37 comprehensive exam or a $20 problem focused limited exam.

What is the difference between a comprehensive treatment plan and a limited exam?

You'll hear the term "comprehensive care" often at Sunshine Dental. It means that your dentist will examine your entire mouth to evaluate your overall oral health, and recommend treatment for long-lasting good health, rather than just fixing your immediate problem.  On the other hand, a limited exam focuses on only one specific problem area or tooth and usually involves only one x-ray.

Do you take my insurance?

Sunshine Family Dentistry is considered an "in network" or preferred provider for most major PPO insurance. If your dental insurance plan allows you to select your own dentist, we will accept your insurance and will gladly submit a claim to your insurance company on your behalf, and we can always check your specific plan's coverage and limitations for you. We will also do our best to provide you with an out-of-pocket estimate before any treatment begins and can work with you to figure out the best financial arrangements to meet your needs.

At what age should my children first see a dentist?

Texas Health Steps recommends parents of newborns to set up baby’s first dental checkup at 6 months old or as soon after that as possible. A checkup this early gives our dentist a chance to see if the baby is at risk for tooth decay (cavities) and set both baby and parents on a course for healthy habits for taking care of teeth and gums.  It is recommended to schedule at 3 month intervals until your child is 3 years old and then every 6 months thereafter.

Can transportation be arranged for my dental visist?

Texas Medicaid and CHIP - Medical Transportation Program sets up non-emergency rides for people who have no other way to get to their Medicaid health-care visits Call 1-855-687-3255 at least 2 work days or more before you need a ride. Make sure when you call that you have this information:

Can other people bring my child to the dentist?

A grandparent, adult brother or sister, adult aunt or uncle, or any adult who has actual care, control, and possession of the minor and has written authorization to consent from the parent may bring a minor and consent for care.  Please fill out this form and send with the responsible adult along with a copy of your driver's license or ID.

Why do I have to have x-rays?

An exam and x-rays are needed in order for the doctor to properly diagnose what type of treatment is needed. The doctor can only see above the gum line. X-rays allow the doctor to see below the gum line and properly diagnose treatment.

On my first visit, why do I have to see the dentist first when I just want a cleaning?

There are actually several levels of cleaning available, depending on your oral health status. To determine the best cleaning for you, your dentist will need to see you first for a comprehensive exam. At this time, any other issues that may be of importance to your overall dental health will be discussed.  Your actual treatment may happen as soon as the same day.

What will happen on my first visit to the office?

Your first appointment with Sunshine Dental will include an exam and consultation, and may include X-rays. Following your exam, the dentist will explain recommendations for your care and give you the opportunity to discuss treatment options and ask questions. Most routine procedures will be performed the same day.

Can parents go back to the treatment room with their child?

While we do permit a parent to go back with their child, it is not recommended.  It has been our experience that children typically do better when the parent is not in the room.
